The final grade, at the highest mark
Chengyang
Grade 8 is the last of the ABRSM graded examinations — there is no grade above it — and Distinction is its highest result, awarded only from 130 marks. Chengyang was awarded 135 out of 150, in repertoire spanning Mozart, Joplin and Bartók.
The ABRSM is the examining board of the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the Royal Northern College of Music. The certificate is a regulated Level 3 qualification and can be verified independently.
Learning to play for an audience
Playing well alone is one skill. Playing well while someone is listening is another, and it has to be taught. We record our students as a matter of routine — not to produce polished films, but because a young musician who is used to a camera is composed in front of an audience.
Eight minutes, unedited: three of the four pieces from Chengyang's Grade 8 programme, played straight through in our Princeton studio with no teacher's comments and nothing cut. It is a record of the work as it actually sounded that day.
He knows every piece by memory, and played his examination from memory. The ABRSM does not require memorisation, so the score is simply open in front of him.
The page turns you can hear are practised too. With shorter music the pages can be taped together and folded, but at this level that is no help — each of these pieces runs to six pages or more. So the turn itself has to be rehearsed: made at a rest, quietly, without breaking the musical line. Chengyang turns slowly here; by the time of the recording it had become imperceptible. It is a small thing, and it is the difference between a recording that sounds composed and one that does not.
This is not the recording submitted to the ABRSM. That was made at Steinway Hall — and we cannot publish it, because the board's identification requirements mean the candidate appears on camera with identification. We will not put that online about a student.
Begin with a Complimentary Music Assessment
Every family joining the Preparatory Program begins the same way — with a complimentary assessment. There is no charge and no obligation. We ask for it because placing a child correctly at the start is the single thing that matters most in the years that follow.
The assessment
A member of our faculty meets your child and listens to them, assessing rhythm, ear, musical memory, attention, and fine motor coordination — along with physical readiness for an instrument and any previous study. It takes 15 minutes and costs nothing.
The teacher’s recommendation
Afterwards the teacher gives their recommendation: whether your child is ready to begin music classes, which subject and pace suit them best, and which faculty member is the right match.
Enrollment
With that recommendation you can complete the Enrollment Form yourself, or ask our admin team to complete it with you — whichever you would prefer.
A note on cost. We share tuition at the Complimentary Music Assessment rather than publishing a single figure. Because we work individually with each child — the subject, the lesson length, the teacher, and the pace all differ — a published price would fit almost nobody. At the assessment you can ask us anything you like about cost, and you will have exact figures for your own child before you decide anything. The assessment itself is free.

They do a great job of combining music theory with hands-on practice on a real piano. The studio is spacious and comfortable, and since lessons are one-on-one, you can easily find a schedule that works for you. The teacher and owner, Sabina Patel, explains things clearly and thoroughly, and she holds students to a reasonable standard. Unfortunately, the location wasn't convenient for us, and it was hard to get my daughter to practice at home — which is essential for making progress. For those reasons, we eventually stopped the lessons.
